Overview

This 2-hour boat tour begins with a short drive from New Orleans to Slidell, near the shores of Lake Pontchartrain and the entrance to Honey Island Swamp, a protected wildlife preserve in Louisiana. Guests board a custom 22-passenger flat-bottom boat designed to navigate narrow swamp and bayou channels quietly, allowing close views of the environment. The professional guide provides live commentary throughout the trip, covering the Louisiana wetlands, swamp and bayou ecosystems, and Cajun culture. While traveling through the swamp and bayou, participants may see alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles, and other bird species. The guide shares information about the alligators, including their size and ancient history. The tour includes a visit to a traditional Cajun village accessible only by boat. After the boat returns to shore, participants arrange their own transportation onward. Food, drinks, gratuities, and transport to the departure point are not included. The tour operates in all weather conditions, so appropriate clothing is recommended.

Honey Island Swamp Boat Tour

The guide welcomes guests aboard a custom 22-passenger flat-bottom boat that can quietly pass through narrow swamp passages. During the approximately 2-hour tour, the guide describes the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and the swamp ecosystem. Wildlife to watch for includes alligators weighing up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg), raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles, and many other bird species. The guide shares that alligators’ ancestors lived alongside dinosaurs and have existed for more than 150 million years. The boat passes through fertile swamplands and visits an authentic Cajun village accessible only by boat. The guide explains how local people have used the swamp for food, homes, and medicine, and discusses the disappearance of wetlands and preservation efforts. After the tour, guests return to shore to continue on their own.
