Originally constructed to provide fresh milk to park visitors and address public health concerns, the Dairy now functions as a visitor center offering information on the park’s design and current events.

5

Central Park's Literary Walk

This quarter-mile path is lined by tall American elm trees, creating a canopy effect. It was designed as the park’s only formal promenade by Olmsted and Vaux.

6

Balto Statue

A bronze statue honoring Balto, the sled dog known for his role in a famous sled dog relay.

7

Central Park Summerstage

Located just east of the Mall, Rumsey Playfield hosts events including music, dance, spoken word, and film screenings.

Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the Lake for ice skating in winter and boating in summer. On December 19, 1858, about 300 ice skaters participated in an unofficial opening of Central Park. The following Christmas morning, nearly 8,000 skaters arrived. Ice skating on the Lake no longer occurs, but boating with rowboats and gondolas has continued for over 150 years.

Sheep Meadow was the most costly part of the original park construction, involving extensive rock removal and soil replacement. From 1864 to 1934, pedigree sheep grazed here to maintain the lawn.
