Overview

The Mount Etna 3-Hour Trek to 2002 Eruption Craters from Piano Provenzana begins with a meeting at 9:45 am at Piano Provenzana, located on the northern side of Mount Etna at 1800 meters altitude. After an initial briefing, the guided trek starts at 10:00 am. The route covers just over 4.5 kilometers roundtrip and lasts approximately three hours. The path ascends about 300 meters to reach the edges of the explosive craters formed during the 2002 eruption, reaching a maximum altitude of 2100 meters. Along the way, the trek passes through forests, volcanic terrain, and the remains of tourist facilities destroyed by lava flows during the 2002 eruption. The route also crosses areas affected by earlier eruptions in 1911 and 1923, including a chain of craters with deep shafts. The descent returns through ash-covered slopes, beech woods, and ski slopes back to the starting point at Piano Provenzana. The difficulty level is rated Tourist (T), suitable for children accustomed to walking. Trekking boots and jackets can be rented on site if needed. The tour includes accident insurance and is led by an authorized volcanological guide. Participants should be in good physical health and aware that the volcanic soil can be unstable. The excursion may be modified or interrupted for safety reasons due to environmental or volcanic conditions.

Itinerary

1

Piano Provenzana

Piano Provenzana is located on Mount Etna’s north side and is accessible by private or rental car via paved roads. It is surrounded by pine forests and lava fields altered by the October 2002 eruption, which destroyed original tourist facilities. The area contains souvenir shops, cafés, and places to refill water bottles. In winter, it serves as a ski resort, and in summer, as the starting point for guided hikes. Parking areas are marked with blue lines for cars and camper vans. Guests meet their volcanological guide at designated points onsite. Compared to other Etna stations, Piano Provenzana is less crowded and offers a quieter experience.

Mount Etna

This guided hike explores the quieter northern slopes of Mount Etna. The route crosses the 7.2 km lava flow from the eruption on October 27, 2002, which buried hotels, shops, restaurants, and parking areas, leaving only one hotel roof visible. The path continues through forests affected by the 1911 and 1923 lava flows, passing a chain of craters from 1911 with shafts between 7 and 40 meters deep. The hike climbs a canyon-like eruptive fracture filled with volcanic bombs, reaching the vent responsible for the 2002 lava flow and nearby large explosive craters at 2100 meters elevation. The descent follows ash channels through beech forests and ski slopes back to the starting point. The round trip is approximately 5 km with around 300 meters of ascent and descent, lasting about 2.5 to 3 hours.
