Overview

This full-day tour from Oaxaca City lasts approximately 11 hours and includes visits to several important sites. The day starts with a stop at Santa Maria del Tule to see the giant Tule tree, which is over 2,000 years old. Next, the tour continues to the archaeological site of Mitla, where visitors spend about one hour exploring buildings decorated with geometric patterns. Mitla is associated with Mictlantecuhtli, the god of death, and its names in Mixtec and Zapotec mean "place of the dead" and "place of rest." After Mitla, the group travels to Teotitlán del Valle to observe the traditional process of making wool rugs on domestic looms using natural dyes such as indigo, cochineal, and stone moss. The tour also includes a visit to Hierve el Agua, known for its petrified waterfalls, where visitors spend about one hour. A stop at a mezcal distillery follows, where the production process is explained and guests can taste different varieties of mezcal as well as mezcal creams. The itinerary includes a break for lunch during the day. Transportation with air conditioning, a bilingual guide, and travel insurance are included. The order of visits may vary, and the visit to Mitla is available only from Wednesday to Sunday. An optional boiling of water experience is available for an additional fee.
