Overview

This 2.5-hour walking tour in Oslo starts at Mathallen, a historic food hall located in the Vulkan neighborhood by the Akerselva river. The guide leads the group through Vulkan for about 45 minutes, pointing out colorful street art, local landmarks, and examples of the area's industrial past combined with modern design. Participants learn about how the neighborhood has changed from an industrial district to a center of creativity and culture. The tour then continues into Grünerløkka, a lively district known for its diverse food scene and cultural atmosphere. Over the course of one hour, the group visits several food stops offering Norwegian specialties and innovative dishes. The tasting menu includes a Nordic platter with minke whale, reindeer, moose, brunost, flatbread, and lingonberries. This is followed by a wild game stew made with reindeer, moose, and venison served in a creamy sauce with mashed potatoes and berries. Additional tastings include a salmon and lefse wrap with cream cheese, a choice of one Norwegian craft beer or a local soft drink from a well-known bar, hot chocolate or iced cocoa near the Freia Chocolate Factory, and a heart-shaped Norwegian waffle topped with brunost, rømme, and raspberry jam. The tour includes lunch, tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, and a live guide. Gratuities are not included.

Meeting point

Meet your guide at Mathallen Food Hall’s main courtyard entrance (Vulkan 5). Look for the red brick building with “1908” above “MATHALLEN OSLO.” This entrance faces the open square near Dansens Hus. Do not go to the river bridge side with “Mathallen” in red letters — that’s the wrong entrance.
