by Bike It Now
This six-hour cycle tour starts in Queenstown with an air-conditioned vehicle transfer to the beginning of a section of the Otago Central Rail Trail, known as New Zealand's Original Great Ride. During the transfer, the driver provides full commentary about the area. Participants receive a bicycle, helmet, top-mounted pannier bag, and a Bike It Now! drink bottle. The cycling route covers one of the most picturesque parts of the trail and is suitable for riders without a high fitness level. Lunch is not included, so riders should bring their own food if they wish. This tour offers a one-day wonder experience of the Otago Central Rail Trail, combining vehicle support and cycling along a renowned New Zealand trail.
Historic Clyde start
The tour starts at 9am at the shop in Historic Clyde where participants receive Merida hire bikes and details about points of interest. A driver transfers them to Auripo to begin cycling. From Auripo, riders travel a short distance to Poolburn Gorge, which passes through the Raggedy Range between the Manuherikia and Ida Valleys. This part includes the 37m high Poolburn Viaduct, two tunnels, the longest bridge on the trail, and Central Otago scenery. After covering 17kms, Muddy Creek Cafe in Omakau is available for coffee and cinnamon scrolls. Riders may choose to detour to historic Ophir before descending Tiger Hill to Chatto Creek Tavern. They can rest there and be picked up at 2.30pm or continue cycling to Clyde. The distances between points are 17kms from Auripo to Omakau, then 12kms to Chatto Creek, followed by 18kms to Alexandra, and finally from Alexandra to Clyde either 8kms via the Rail Trail or 12kms using the River Trail.
