Overview

This guided walking tour lasts about 90 minutes and covers the main sites on Île de la Cité in Paris. The tour begins at the equestrian statue of Henri IV, known as the 'Good King,' and continues to Square du Vert-Galant, a small park at the tip of the island with views of the Seine. Visitors then walk to Place Dauphine, a quiet triangular square created as a residential area by Henri IV. The route passes the Court of Appeal building, where the guide points out its judicial significance. Next is the Tour de l’Horloge, a medieval clock tower dating back to 1370, followed by an exterior view of the Conciergerie, a former royal palace turned prison during the French Revolution. The tour also includes the classical façade of the Palais de Justice, which houses France’s highest courts. Guests see the outside of Sainte-Chapelle, a 13th-century chapel noted for its Gothic architecture and stained glass, and then visit the Marché aux Fleurs, a historic flower market on the island. The guide ends the walking portion outside the entrance to the Archaeological Crypt beneath Notre-Dame Cathedral. If the ticket option is selected, guests can enter the crypt on their own to view the remains of the original city foundations. Entry to Notre-Dame Cathedral itself is not included, but guests may visit it independently before or after the tour. The guide provides tips on what to look for in the cathedral’s Gothic façade and sculptures. If the crypt is closed for maintenance, the tour remains about one hour and includes only the walking portion around Notre-Dame.
