Overview

This personalized nine-hour tour of Quito begins with a 15-minute visit to Fundación Iglesia de la Compañía, an American Baroque church known for its gold-leaf altars and Muslim-influenced decoration, housing the remains of St. Marion of Jesus. Next is a 15-minute stop at Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco, a 16th-century Catholic complex located on Plaza de San Francisco. The tour continues with about 25 minutes at Plaza de la Independencia (Plaza Grande), the main square of Quito, featuring a monument to the independence heroes of August 10, 1809. After leaving the city center, there is a 10-minute photo stop at the Mitad del Mundo monument with an explanation of its history and significance. The next visit is to the Intiñan Equator Museum for 50 minutes, where participants can take part in hands-on experiments related to the equator line, such as observing water draining in opposite directions on either side of the line and balancing an egg on a nail. Following this, there is a 20-minute photo stop at the Basilica del Voto Nacional, accompanied by a guide’s explanation of its history and architecture. The tour then includes a ride on the Teleférico cable car, ascending to over 13,400 feet (4090 meters) above sea level, with about one hour at the top to view the city from above, weather permitting. Finally, the tour visits Rucu Pichincha volcano for 30 minutes at 13,000 feet elevation to explore the area and take photographs. Included are private transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off within Quito, admission fees to the Intiñan Museum and Teleférico, chocolate tasting, and a certified English/Spanish-speaking guide.
