Overview

This half-day walking tour in Rome lasts about three hours and includes a professional guide and bus transfers between stops. The tour starts with a bus ride to the Roman countryside, where visitors explore the Catacombs of San Callisto. These catacombs are among the largest burial sites in Italy, containing underground tunnels and crypts such as the Crypt of St. Cecilia and the Crypt of the Popes, the final resting places of 500,000 Christians and several martyrs and popes. After the catacombs, the bus continues to the Circus of Maxentius located within Caffarella Park. Though less famous than the Circus Maximus, this well-preserved ruin offers insight into Roman entertainment venues. The next stop is an external visit to the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella on a hill along the Appian Way. This tomb was built in the 1st century B.C. to honor a Roman noblewoman. The tour concludes with a walk along the Appian Way, one of the oldest and most important roads from ancient Rome. Known as the “Queen of Roads,” this route connected Rome to Brindisi and was a key trade link to Greece and the East. Admission to the catacombs and headsets are included, while hotel transfers and food are not. A dress code requiring covered shoulders and knees is strictly enforced at the catacombs.
