Vatican City contains the largest collection of art in the Western Hemisphere and the world’s biggest basilica. The group spends about 30 minutes inside Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, which welcomes over five million visitors per year. The chapel was designed by Pope Sixtus IV, modeled after Solomon’s temple, and is slightly larger than a professional basketball court. Besides Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes, the chapel features frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino, Cosimo Roselli, and Sandro Botticelli.

The tour ends with access to St. Peter’s Basilica through a private entry via the Scala Regia, passing the Pope’s office and Swiss Guards. The basilica is the largest in the world and contains Michelangelo’s Pieta near the entrance, 150 mosaics, and Bernini’s baldacchino, which is 96 feet tall and made of 100,000 pounds of bronze. Only one painting hangs in the basilica, above the Pieta. Many popes are buried there, mostly beneath the basilica, including St. Peter, the first pope.
