This 3.5-hour walking food tour takes place in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood and includes more than seven tastings of local Roman dishes and wines. The tour begins near Ponte Fabricio, the oldest Roman bridge still in its original form, built in 62 BC and located close to Tiber Island, where the ancient Temple of Aesculapius once stood. From there, the group walks to Piazza in Piscinula, named after the ancient thermal baths that once filled the area, with views of the 15th-century Mattei Houses. The next stop is the House of Dante, a research center dedicated to the poet Dante Alighieri. The route continues to Vicolo del Moro, a street known for its local shops and artisans, and passes by La Renella Bakery, one of Rome’s oldest bakeries. The final stop is Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, home to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, founded in 217 AD, featuring 13th-century façade mosaics and Rome’s oldest fountain dating back to the time of Emperor Augustus. Throughout the tour, participants taste Roman-style artichoke, creamy burrata served with DOP Prosecco, fiori di zucca (fried zucchini flowers stuffed with anchovies and mozzarella) at a well-known trattoria, supplí (Roman fried rice balls), roasted Porchetta from a local family deli, two types of Roman pasta paired with local Roman wine, and gelato from a popular gelateria. A secret dish is also included. The tour is designed to show Trastevere like a local and requires walking, so comfortable shoes are recommended. It does not include hotel pickup or gratuities. Ponte Fabricio, also called the Bridge of the Four Heads, is Rome’s oldest bridge still in original form, built in 62 BC. Nearby Tiber Island was the site of the Temple of Aesculapius, dedicated in response to a plague in 293 BC to the god of medicine known as Asclepius in Greek or Aesculapius in Latin.
