Overview

The day trip starts at Parque de la 93 in Bogotá, where participants meet the guide and board transportation. If the hotel is within the route area, a pickup service is included. The first stop is the town of Guatavita, a white town rebuilt after the creation of the Tominé dam. Visitors spend about twenty minutes here to see local views and learn about the town's history. Next, the tour continues to Guatavita Lagoon for two hours. At the lagoon, known for the Muisca ritual linked to the El Dorado legend, visitors take a hike that includes climbing 152 steps to reach the water’s edge. A Spanish-speaking local guide accompanies the group during this visit. The tour highlights the Route of the 7 Treasures of El Dorado, which includes Guatavita Lagoon as one of these treasures. After the lagoon, the tour crosses the savannah to reach the municipality of Zipaquirá. Visitors spend around two hours inside the Salt Cathedral, known as the First Wonder of Colombia and another of the 7 Treasures. An audio guide is available in Spanish and English for the Salt Cathedral, but visitors should bring their own headphones with an audio jack. The tour includes roundtrip transportation with a Spanish-speaking driver, insurance, lunch time, entrance to Guatavita Lagoon, and a bilingual tour coordinator. Entrance to the Salt Cathedral is optional and depends on the ticket selected. The tour ends back in Bogotá, with the return time depending on local traffic. Seating is assigned by order of arrival. Currently, Guatavita Lagoon tours are only available in Spanish. Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended for the hike to the lagoon.
