Overview

This private walking tour of Siena lasts two to three hours and is led by a licensed local guide. The tour begins at the Basilica San Domenico, where visitors see the relic of St. Catherine's head inside the church. Next, the group visits the Sanctuary of St. Catherine from the outside, including the house where she lived, now divided into three small churches. The walk continues to Palazzo Tolomei, one of Siena's oldest private buildings, associated with a medieval legend about the city's symbol. The tour proceeds to Piazza del Campo, the main square, where the guide explains the history of the Palio horse race and the city's districts called Contrade while viewing the Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall. After this, the route passes the Baptistery of San Giovanni, noted for its unfinished upper section, and then to the Crypt of the Siena Cathedral, seen from outside. The tour ends at the Siena Cathedral, originally planned to be the largest cathedral in the world; the guide explains why construction was stopped. Visitors may choose to enter the cathedral to see artworks by artists such as Michelangelo, Donatello, and Bernini. Tickets for the cathedral interior are available for purchase onsite and are not included in the tour price. The itinerary can be customized with the guide to focus on particular interests, including the Palio tradition or other medieval landmarks. The tour highlights the medieval charm of Siena through its ancient streets, churches, squares, and buildings. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Note that the cathedral interior cannot be visited on Sunday mornings because it opens after 1 pm.
