Overview

This full-day or half-day bus tour in Sintra offers private transportation with a Portuguese local driver who provides historical information about the sites visited. The tour includes various options such as the mountain express or the mountain tour, and may include lunch and entrance tickets depending on the selected package. The journey lasts about 6 to 8 hours and features stops at several notable viewpoints and landmarks known mainly to locals. The itinerary begins in the Historic Center of Sintra and follows the Volta do Duche route. The tour passes by the Sintra National Palace, a former royal residence dating back to the 15th century, known for its mix of architectural styles and its large twin kitchen chimneys. Guests will also see the Biester Palace and Park, located at the start of the Sintra mountain range and featured in the film "The Ninth Gate" with Johnny Depp. Visitors may choose to walk around the Moorish Castle ruins for about 30 minutes, which offers views from the Serra de Sintra to the sea. Optional visits include the Pena Park and National Palace, a 19th-century Romantic-style palace situated on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by over 200 hectares of gardens with rare tree species. The Quinta da Regaleira estate, with its gardens, lakes, grottos, and symbolic architecture, can also be visited optionally. Another optional stop is the Monserrate Palace and Park, a romantic garden and palace built by English millionaire Francis Cook featuring exotic trees and waterfalls. The tour continues with a 30-minute stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Portugal and Europe. It then proceeds to Azenhas do Mar, a coastal village with a natural rock pool formed by the sea, followed by a brief 15-minute stop at Boca do Inferno, a seaside cliff formation known for its powerful waves. Finally, the tour passes through Cascais, a former fishing village with notable sites including Guincho Beach, Cascais Marina, and the historic town center, where guests may spend about 90 minutes before concluding the trip. Entrance tickets for monuments, parking fees, and gratuities are not included in the price.

Drive-by the Sintra National Palace, also called Palácio da Vila, used by the Portuguese Royal Family until 1910. Built from the 15th century with an unknown architect, it features medieval, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and Romantic architectural styles. The palace is an example of organic architecture with connected courtyards, stairs, corridors, and galleries. It houses the largest collection of Mudéjar tiles in Portugal and is dominated by two large twin chimneys over the kitchen, a symbol of Sintra.

Park and National Palace of Pena

Optional visit to Pena Park and Palace. Visitors may buy tickets for the gardens or for both gardens and palace. The palace, built in the 19th century, is a prime example of Romantic architecture and stands on a rocky cliff as the second highest point in Serra de Sintra. It was named one of Portugal's seven wonders in 2007 and is the first Romantic palace in Europe, predating Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria by about 30 years. The palace overlooks over 200 hectares of woodland. The park includes paths, bridges, grottos, pergolas, fountains, greenhouses, and rare plant species from around the world, making it Europe's richest botanical park in terms of tree species.

6

Quinta da Regaleira

Optional visit to Quinta da Regaleira, also known as Monteiro dos Milhões Palace after its former owner António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. Located on a hillside near Sintra's Historic Center, the estate was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini. It features 4 hectares of gardens, lakes, grottos, and enigmatic constructions with symbolic meanings linked to alchemy, Freemasonry, Templars, and Rosicrucianism. The architecture combines Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles, making it a place to explore gardens, buildings, and the philosophical palace.

7
