Castel Sant'Angelo

Constructed around 123 A.D. as the tomb for Emperor Hadrian and his family, Castel Sant'Angelo has experienced continuous changes that reflect nearly 2,000 years of Roman history. Unlike many Roman monuments that became ruins or were dismantled, it has transformed from a funerary monument to a fortress, prison, and papal residence. Its strategic location near Saint Peter's Basilica and at the northern entrance to Rome made it a center of political importance. The structure features strong walls and frescoed rooms that illustrate its various historical roles, linking Rome’s past with the present.
