Overview

The tour begins in St Peter's Square, where the group meets a local guide who explains the square’s architecture, history, and the optical illusions created by its designers. After a brief walk through security, the group enters St Peter's Basilica. The first part of the visit is a climb of 281 steps to the top of Michelangelo's dome. From the dome, participants can see panoramic views of Rome and observe the stained glass windows that illuminate the dome’s interior. This climb and time at the dome take about thirty minutes. After descending, the tour continues inside St Peter's Basilica for approximately ninety minutes. The guide describes the artworks and architecture by artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini, and Raphael. The group then visits the Papal tombs beneath the basilica, where popes including John Paul II and others from as early as the fifth century are buried. The entire tour lasts about two and a half hours and is limited to a maximum of six people to maintain a small-group setting. A private option is also available.
