Overview

This tip-based walking tour of Taipei Old Town lasts about two hours and fifteen minutes. It begins at NTU Hospital Station Exit 4 at street level. The tour starts with a twenty-minute visit to 228 Peace Memorial Park, where participants see the 228 Memorial Monument and the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum, which explains the events of the 1947 February 28 Incident. The National Taiwan Museum is also located at the park's north entrance. Next, the route passes the Presidential Office Building, originally built during the Japanese colonial period as the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan. The building was damaged during World War II and later restored to serve as Taiwan’s Presidential Office. The tour then stops for about ten minutes at Chengzhong Market, a covered bazaar selling household goods, logo T-shirts, and snacks such as ba-wan dumplings. After this, participants spend sixty minutes in Ximending, a pedestrian shopping district known for its variety of fashion shops, restaurants, clubs, and bars. Included in this time is a twenty-minute visit to the Ximen Red House, a Western-style building constructed in 1908 by the Japanese. This building and its surrounding square support Taipei’s creative and cultural industries with daily exhibitions and performances. The tour ends with a ten-minute visit to Taipei Zhongshan Hall, a historic building that originally served as the city’s public auditorium. A professional guide leads the tour and provides an introduction to Taiwan’s history and the significance of each site. Tips for the guide and snacks are not included.
