Overview

Participants meet their guide at Michaelerplatz in front of the Schullin building to begin a walking tour of Vienna’s Hofburg Palace complex. The tour lasts about two and a half hours and includes visits to the Sisi Museum, Imperial Apartments, the courtyards, Heldenplatz, and Burggarten. The guide starts with an introduction at Michaelerplatz, a historic square surrounded by Baroque architecture. Next, the group passes the Spanish Riding School stables to learn about the Lipizzaner horses and Austria’s equestrian tradition. The tour then moves inside with skip-the-line access to the Sisi Museum, where visitors see personal belongings of Empress Elisabeth and explore the Imperial Apartments, learning about the daily life of the Habsburg rulers. After the museum, the group visits Heldenplatz, Vienna’s Heroes’ Square, where the guide explains its historical significance and points out views of the Ringstraße landmarks including the Parliament and City Hall. The walk continues to Burggarten, a quiet garden once private to the imperial family, where guests can see the Mozart statue and views of nearby cathedrals. The tour concludes with a walk through the Hofburg Palace courtyards and wings, highlighting architectural features and historical points such as the Imperial Treasury and Vienna Boys’ Choir, finishing with a group photo. The tour includes a licensed guide speaking one language, headsets for groups of 18 or more, and skip-the-line tickets to the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments. The garden areas are free to enter. The tour is not suitable for people with disabilities and requires punctual arrival. Some areas of the Sisi Museum may be closed during 2025 renovations. In winter months, garden visits may be replaced with a visit to a local Christmas Market if weather conditions require.
