Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum
Located at the former Portland Company Marine Complex, this museum was founded in 1993. It preserves passenger and freight equipment and artifacts from Maine's 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railways that operated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The organization runs a 1 1⁄2-mile (2.4 km) railroad along Casco Bay's waterfront, parallel to Portland's Eastern Promenade. Passenger services use historic steam and diesel locomotives along with restored coaches.
Portland Observatory
The Portland Observatory, built in 1807 on Munjoy Hill, is the only surviving maritime signal tower in the US. It allowed communication between ships and shore using telescopes and flags before vessels arrived. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2006 and now operates as a museum.
The Wadsworth-Longfellow House
This historic house museum at 489 Congress Street is managed by the Maine Historical Society. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
Portland Museum of Art
Founded in 1882 as the Portland Society of Art, this is Maine’s largest and oldest public art institution. It is situated in Portland’s downtown Arts District.
Victoria Mansion
Also known as the Morse-Libby House, this downtown Portland mansion is a notable example of Italianate residential architecture. It features a brownstone exterior, detailed interiors, opulent furnishings, and early technological features. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
