Overview

This full-day bus tour from Kona lasts about 11 hours and covers the Big Island’s volcanic landscapes and local highlights. The tour begins with a visit to an award-winning Kona coffee farm, where guests get exclusive access to the farm with a tasting and guided tour lasting an hour. Next, the group stops at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach on the southeastern Ka'u coast for 45 minutes to see the black volcanic sand and possibly Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles resting on the shore. The main portion of the trip is a four-hour visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Lunch is provided at the Rim Restaurant inside the Historic Volcano House, which overlooks Kilauea’s caldera. After lunch, the tour explores the park’s diverse geological and cultural features, including the Chain of Craters Road from the summit area down to the sea. The return drive includes a 90-minute passage along Saddle Road (Route 200). This 55-mile route passes through four distinct climate zones and features visible lava flows and volcanic terrain formed over hundreds of thousands of years. On the way back toward Kona or Waikoloa, the tour pauses for 30 minutes at Big Island Candies to see how handmade chocolates and cookies are made using local ingredients. The trip also includes a 30-minute drive through the historic town of Hilo. The tour provides water, drinks, coats, raincoats, umbrellas, snacks, lunch, tea, and coffee. It is led by guides with geological expertise and extensive knowledge of the Big Island.
