Overview

This full-day wine tour lasts about seven hours and includes transport with air conditioning and a guide. Selected hotels in Auckland offer pickup and drop-off. The tour begins with a drive through Henderson Valley to the Aratkai Visitors Centre, where guests can see elevated views of the Waitakere Ranges, a protected regional reserve once used for timber extraction during Auckland’s early colonial period. Next, the tour visits Piha, a black sand surf beach settlement on the West Coast about 50 km from Auckland. Visitors have around 45 minutes to walk on both North and South Piha beaches, stroll approximately 25 minutes through the nearby rainforest, and take photos of Lion Rock. Piha has no public transport and is known for its surfing, hiking, and natural scenery. After Piha, the tour continues with a 50-minute drive through rainforest to Soljans Estate Winery. Here, guests can taste wines produced by a fifth-generation Croatian winemaking family from Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, and Marlborough vineyards. The visit includes an open-menu one-course lunch at Soljans’ vineyard restaurant, featuring local fish, steak, lamb, chicken, vegetarian, and other dishes. The afternoon stop is Kumeu River Wines, known for estate-grown Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Methode Traditionelle. Guests take a tutored tasting of five wines in the cellar door, followed by a detailed behind-the-scenes tour showing the winemaking process from grape pressing to barrel aging and bottling. This includes viewing the barrel room and tank farm. The tour does not include infant seats for children under seven and lunch is excluded.
