Overview

This 4-hour kayak trip starts at 10 AM from Grant Village Marina on Yellowstone Lake to avoid afternoon winds and waves. The tour begins with a safety briefing from the kayak instructor, who also explains paddle techniques. The guide-to-guest ratio is one to six, and participants must be at least 14 years old. The paddle covers about six miles along the lake shore through the West Thumb area. While kayaking, participants may see wildlife such as bears or elk and observe geysers, hot springs, and local fish and waterfowl. The route reaches Potts Geyser Basin, which cannot be seen from the road, before turning back. After paddling, the group spends time at West Thumb Geyser Basin viewed from the water, avoiding crowded boardwalks. Here, thermal features bubble up beneath the lake surface, including the Abyss and Black Pools, where shorebirds often nest. The tour ends with lunch on a quiet obsidian beach on Yellowstone Lake’s shore, where a sandwich and brown bag lunch are provided. Morning hot drinks, light snacks, bottled water, dry bags for personal items, personal flotation devices, paddle jackets, and either single or tandem kayaks with paddles are included.
