Maheno Shipwreck

In July 1935 while it was being towed to Japan, a winter cyclone caused the tow line to break and the TSS Maheno was pushed onto the eastern beach of Fraser Island where, after several unsuccessful attempts to refloat the valuable hulk, it remains today.

The towline snapped, and the ship was stranded on Fraser Island, where she remains as a rusting shipwreck today. The wreck of the Maheno has since become a popular tourist attraction on Fraser Island, and although much of the ship has deteriorated, parts of the structure are still visible.

During her final journey from Melbourne to Japan where she was set to be scrapped, a cyclone struck, leaving the Maheno adrift in the ocean off the east coast of Australia. She eventually beached on K'gari (Fraser Island) two days later, where she still remains today.

The Batavia smashes into a reef On a stormy night in June 1629, about 8 months after the voyage started, the Batavia ran aground on a coral reef near Beacon Island off Western Australia. About 100 of the roughly 340 people on board died in the shipwreck.
