Known to Tassie locals as simply 'National Park', Mount Field is one of Tasmania's most spectacular nature escapes. Just after the COVID lockdowns had lifted, I ventured south to Tasmania to visit my family for the first time in over a year.

How far is Mount Field from Hobart?

Mount Field National Park is a 70min drive (73km) north-west of Hobart. From the visitor centre, a narrow unsealed road climbs for 15km to Lake Dobson and the start of the walking trails into the alpine areas.

This State road is the only vehicular access to the park. Mt Field National Park is in a wilderness area and exposed to all the elements of nature. Even during the middle of summer there can be unexpected changes in the weather that brings snow, ice, sleet and strong winds.
