What is the history of the Cloth Hall in Ypres?

In 1173, historical sources mention a Halla in Ypres for the first time: a covered hall where cloth was traded. It was probably a wooden structure. It is unclear whether there was also a belfry at that time. Construction of the imposing complex we know today began around 1250 and was completed around 1378.

What is a Lakenhalle?

A cloth hall (also called a lakenhalle in Flanders) is a building that has its origins in the Middle Ages as a trading and stacking place for cloth.

When was Ypres rebuilt?

The rebuilding of Ypres took over fifty years in total. The belfry of the Cloth Hall was completed in 1934, and the entire Hall itself wasn't finished until 1967. The Menin Gate was officially opened in July 1927. The reconstructed city quickly became, and remains, the heart of remembrance for the entire Salient.
