The first mosque in the nation was built by the third Sultan, Sultan Sharif Ali who is also known as Sultan Berkat. This mosque known as Masjid Besar was burnt by the Spanish on June 23, 1578 during the Brunei-Spain War, known as 'Perang Kastela' (Castela War).
