Wonderland Sculpture

Wonderland is the portrait of a young girl who lives in the artist's native Barcelona. Depicting only her head, the portrait represents humanity as well as our human potential created and fostered by our dreams.

Located in front of The Bow building in Downtown Calgary, The Wonderland Sculpture is painted stainless steel wire mesh head of a young girl. ⁠ Standing at 12 meters (39 feet) tall, the sculpture was created by renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and installed in early 2013.

The Women Are Persons! sculpture, also known as the Famous Five monument, commemorates the contributions of the Famous Five — Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards and Irene Parlby — who were pivotal in the fight for women's rights in Canada.

Installed in 2013, this illuminated public artwork is often referred to as the "Blue Ring" and acts as a frame for the surrounding landscape. The sculpture cost approximately $470,000, causing significant public debate regarding its cost, design, and artistic merit.
