Rideau Hall

Rideau Hall has been the official residence and workplace of every governor general of Canada since 1867. The governor general lives here, confers with the leader of Canada's government, hosts foreign dignitaries and performs the functions of Canada's head of state, as the representative of the Crown in Canada.

Function. Rideau Hall's main purpose is to house the governor general of Canada and his or her offices, including the Canadian Heraldic Authority. It is also the residence of Canada's monarch when he is in Ottawa.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family occupied the cottage for the duration of his tenure, from November 2015 to March 2025, since the prime minister's official residence at 24 Sussex Drive had been closed for assessment and restoration.

This national historic site is set in an idyllic, 79-acre urban oasis located only a few minutes from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau. You are welcome to visit the residence and workplace of the governor general and the grounds year-round.
