What is the best time to see the Reversing Falls?
At low tide the river empties into the bay causing a series of rapids and whirlpools. As the tide rises, it slows the river current for a brief period—called slack tide. The Bay's tide continues to rise, gradually reversing the flow of the river; rapids form again, peaking at high tide.
Why is it called Reversing Falls?
The semi-diurnal tides of the bay force the flow of water to reverse against the prevailing current when the tide is high.
What is the Reversing Falls tide at St John?
At the Reversing Falls, the tides are so powerful that they actually push the Saint John River against its natural flow. Every 12 hours, the current changes direction, creating the illusion of the river emptying into the Bay of Fundy and then being pulled back upstream.
Do you have to pay to see the Reversing Falls?
Zip line rates vary depending on the time of year. The rapids are viewable 24 hours a day throughout the year. To see them from the Reversing Falls Restaurant, expect to pay 8 to 15 Canadian dollars (or $6 to $11) per person between May 18 and Oct. 31, and CA$7 (about $5) per person during the offseason.
