Overview. The most planted grape type is Mavro, it has dark color and literally translates as 'black' from Greek. Mavro is mainly used for producing the region's renowned wine Commandaria. The wine combines natural sweetness with high alcohol level and has similarities with a Passito or fortified wine.

Romanée-Conti Burgundy lays claim to a large number of the world's most storied vineyards. Many of these inimitable sites, also known as climats, are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Perhaps the most iconic site is Romanée-Conti, of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) fame.

A variety of wines are today produced by wineries from grapes grown in the vineyards at Geçitköy, Güzelyurt as well as in Ilgaz, set high upon the hills of the Five Finger Mountains overlooking the Mediterranean. Wines are further produced from grapes purchased from local farmers.

Mavro is a red variety that dominates the Cypriot vineyard, it thrives in all soils, from the most fertile to the most barren. As a rule its grapes once turned into wine in the usual process, produce balanced, slightly astringent wines, with a weak colour and aroma, which are not amenable to long term ageing.
