Is the Unfinished Obelisk worth visiting?
Is the Unfinished Obelisk worth visiting during a trip to Aswan? Absolutely. The Unfinished Obelisk offers unique insights into ancient construction methods that no other site reveals. Combined with nearby landmarks and cultural experiences, it makes Aswan an unparalleled destination full of history, charm, and wonder.
What is the Unfinished Obelisk theory?
The report (State, 2007) revealed that “The unfinished Obelisk Quarry in Aswan, Egypt, has a canal that may have connected to the Nile and allowed the large stone monuments to float to their permanent locations.” So, the pre-obelisk might be moved by such a canal, not overland, from the quarry to the Nile.
Who built the Unfinished Obelisk?
Its creation was possibly ordered by Hatshepsut (1508–1458 BC), possibly to complement what would later be known as the Lateran Obelisk (which was originally at Karnak, and was later brought to the Lateran Palace in Rome). The unfinished obelisk is nearly one-third larger than any ancient Egyptian obelisk ever erected.
Why was the Unfinished Obelisk at the quarry abandoned?
Continuing work would have resulted in the obelisk breaking during transport, erection, or from its own weight once standing. Faced with this fundamental flaw, project supervisors made the pragmatic decision to abandon the obelisk rather than waste additional resources completing a monument that would ultimately fail.
