Fiji Museum

Located in the heart of Suva's Thurston Gardens, the Fiji Museum holds a remarkable collection, which includes archaeological material dating back 3,700 years and cultural objects representing both Fiji's indigenous inhabitants and the other communities that have settled in the island group over the past 200 years.

Most Fiji visitors aim for the island chain's sugary beaches, lavish resorts, and lapping waves. But to see the urban side of the South Pacific, there's nowhere better than Suva. The country's capital and largest city—on the island of Viti Levu—is a melting pot of cultures (global, modern, and ancient).

To the east of the city lies the mouth of the mighty Rewa river, and Suva itself sits on a hilly area—hence its name; "Suva" means "little hill" in an old Fijian dialect—between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbor. The city's eastern region, which is home to its main commercial street and wharf, is comparatively flat.

In Fiji, one of the major risks to our population is the rising crisis of non-communicable diseases (NCD's). In recent decades, NCD's have become the biggest killer in Fiji, causing thousands of deaths every year – many of those deaths premature – and affecting the lives of many more.
