Why was Rovaniemi destroyed in WWII?
In revenge for the Finns change of side, German troops purposefully destroyed villages, towns and infrastructure in the Lapland region during their retreat. Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, was particularly hard hit, and about 90 per cent of the city was left in ruins.
