Girondins Monument (Monument aux Girondins)

This allegorical monument, erected between 1894 and 1899, by Victor Rich (sculptors Charpentier, Debré and Dumilâtre) in memory of the Girondin deputies beheaded in 1792, forms an astonishing sculptural ensemble.

Football Bordeaux have also won four Coupe de France titles, three Coupe de la Ligue titles, and three Trophée des champions titles as well. In international competitions Bordeaux has reached the UEFA Cup final in 1996 and the Latin Cup final in 1950.

There are no less than 14 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Gironde! Bordeaux, Port of the Moon is at the top of the list: this vast perimeter of 1810 hectares has been inscribed since 2007.

The Girondins played a key role in the French Revolution, gradually expanding their power to control the National Assembly, the Legislative Assembly, and soon the National Convention as well. They controlled its early phase, guiding France as it produced a constitution and put King Louis XVI on trial.
