What was the miracle of Augsburg?
A miracle was said to have occurred in 1194 when a woman took a piece of the sacramental communion bread back home. The longer she kept it, the more it appeared to be transformed into a mysterious blood-red object. Five years later, she finally confessed to her misdemeanor and returned the sacrement to the priest.
Who built St. Anne's Church?
Consecrated in 1686 by Bishop Henry Compton (after whom Old Compton Street is named) the original church was designed by William Talman, who worked under Sir Christopher Wren. This large church was of similar layout to nearby St Martin in the Fields with a gallery on three sides above the nave.
