James Fort

Fort James in Accra, Ghana, is a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1673 by the Royal African Company as a trading post for gold and slaves. Named after James II, it later functioned as a prison, notably holding Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

Jamestown is full of monuments such as Usher Fort, Lighthouse, the old port, the Customs House, the old Post Office and the first hotel built in Accra. Don't forget to visit the food markets, such as the fish market at the old port, and the no-food market at Timber Market.

Slavery on the Gold Coast This route brought goods to the West African coast, slaves to the Americas, and raw materials to Europe. The Gold Coast, now present-day Ghana, got its name in the 15th century because of the gold and other valuable goods found in the area.
