Is Aquincum worth visiting?

Roman Ruins at Aquincum The ruins include certain surprises like a stone tile with a sewer grate built into it, an underground central heating system, mosaic-covered thermal baths, or a marketplace. These are some of the most impressive parts of the ruins.

Is Aquincum open to the public?

The Aquincum Museum is open year-round, but closed on Mondays. English-speaking guides are available with advance booking. There is a fee to enter the museum except on Hungarian national holidays (March 15, August 20 and October 23). Public buses stop at the north and south entrances to the archaeological park.

What happened to Aquincum?

The inhabitants gradually left Aquincum, and when the Huns arrived at the beginning of the 5th century they found it deserted. Methodical efforts to unearth the remains of Aquincum began in the late 19th century, and many of the finds from the excavations are on display in the Aquincum Museum in Budapest.
