Kapaleeshwarar Temple

Kapaleeswarar Temple stands as a testament to Tamil Nadu's profound religious and cultural heritage. This ancient shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kapaleeswar and Goddess Shakthi (commonly referred to as Karpagambal), exudes reverence and mystique that has attracted devotees and tourists for centuries alike.

Shiva is called Kapaleshwara and Kapalam means skull. This name comes from the Puranic incident where Brahma once became so arrogant about his power of creation that in order to teach him humility, Mahadeva Shiva had to pluck off one of Brahma's five heads and that is why Shiva came to be known as Kapaleshwar.

One should visit this temple during the month of Shravan or on the day of Mahashivratri to enjoy the beauty and feel the religious essence to the fullest extent. The jyotirling here is said to be self-originated and there are temples of Lord Ganesh, Hanuman, Datta, Saibaba in the temple premises.

To maintain the sanctity of the sacred space, visitors are expected to wear traditional or modest attire that covers the shoulders and knees. For men, this typically means wearing a dhoti with a shirt or full-length pants and a shirt. Women are encouraged to wear sarees or salwar kameez with a dupatta.
