It is the oldest Catholic church still in use in Cork city, and is the parish church of St Finbarr's South parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cork and Ross. The church is included in the Record of Protected Structures maintained by Cork City Council.
What is St Finbar best known for?
He was educated at Kilmacahil monastery in Kilkenny, Ireland. He was known for his distinctive feature, very light hair, which earned him the nickname Fionnbharr, meaning "white hair." Saint Finbar preached extensively in southern Ireland, and there are also accounts that suggest that he may have preached in Scotland.
