What is the history of the Jeanie Johnston ship?
The history of the Jeanie Johnston began when she made her maiden voyage from Blennerville in Tralee, Co. Kerry to Quebec in Canada in 1848 with 193 passengers on board. She carried 2,500 Irish emigrants on 16 transatlantic voyages to North America throughout the Famine years.
What happened to the Dunbrody ship after the Famine?
After the famine had ended, the Graves family continued to operate the Dunbrody until she was sold in 1869 to another company. She went on to suffer two groundings, the second being fatal. She was sailing to Liverpool in 1875 with £12,500 worth of timber, when a strong gale blew her off her course and onto the shore.
Where did the Jeanie Johnston sink?
In 1858, en route to Quebec from Hull with a cargo of timber, she became waterlogged. The crew climbed into the rigging, and after nine days clinging to their slowly-sinking ship, they were rescued by a Dutch ship, the Sophie Elizabeth. Even in her loss, she maintained her perfect safety record.
