Arezzo Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande (Big Square) is the heart of Arezzo's historical centre. Unique for its original trapezoidal shape and steeply sloping plane, it is characterised by a harmonious alternation of buildings from various eras providing it with an evocative and scenic appearance.

The Piazza was therefore where power was communicated, celebrated and reinforced and also where it showed the terrible, sinister, spectacular side of the course of justice. It was also the stage for solemn religious processions which then continued through the city's main streets.

Arezzo is a city with an ancient history, one of the most important cities of Etruria and a strategic point in Roman times, reaching its maximum splendour between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Famous films have been shot there, such as 'Life is Beautiful' (La Vita è Bella), 'The English Patient' and 'Under the Tuscan Sun'.
