What makes La Zisa unique?
Architectural style The structure includes Islamic elements such as muqarnas, and vaulted niches. In the 14th century merlons were added, by partly destroying the Arab inscription (in Kufic characters) which embellished the upper part of the building.
What is the history of Zisa Palace?
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, the building dates to the 12th century and is named after an Arab term meaning “the glorious” or “the splendid”. Built outside Palermo's old city walls by skilled Muslim workers, the Zisa Palace was used to host the Norman kings during the summer.
Has La Zisa been restored?
It had fallen into disrepair and was restored in the 1990's. When walking around the many vaulted rooms with decorative muqarnas, you can see what has been restored, and the changes made in the 14th and 16th centuries. It now houses a museum of Sicilian Islamic art, with works from the 9th to 12th centuries.
Why is there a Chinese palace in Palermo?
Giuseppe Vananzio Marvuglia, an Italian architect, designed the Palazzina Cinese ("Chinese House") as an homage to 18th century Chinese architecture (or at least, Marvuglia's interpretation of it). The Palazzina Cinese was commissioned for King Ferdinand III of Sicily.
