Ponte Pietra

Pietra Bridge. Ponte Pietra (literally Stone Bridge) is the first construction realized by the Romans when they arrived in Verona in the first century B.C. It is characterized by the combination of two different materials: the original white stone and the bricks that replaced the damages suffered by floods and war.

In 1945 retreating German troops made the bridge blow-up; it was thus necessary to reconstruct it by recovering some of its original stones and bricks from the Adige River where the explosion had hurled them. The bridge measures 92,8 meters.

Borghetto sul Mincio is one of the most beautiful villages near Verona. The tiny hamlet of old water mills sits directly on top of the river Mincio. The crumbling 14th-century Ponte Visconteo, a Scaliger castle and so much lush greenery surround the medieval village, while rapid, water cascades flow through its centre.

Ponte Pietra. Verona's oldest bridge has a history that plays out like a Hollywood blockbuster. It was built by the Romans back in 100 BC in order to provide easy access to and from the city's amphitheatre.
