The word "Sasebo" (means "leaf port"; also pronounced "Saseho" long ago due to Japanese sailors' preference) is probably from the name of a Japanese ruler in the area, Isamu Sasebo, one of the families in the Matsuura clan (his name originally was Matsuura Tango Genzaburo Isamu).
