Gandantegchinlen Monastery (Gandan Khiid)

Built in the mid 19th century, it is the only monastery where Buddhist services continued to function even during the communist past. Temples are flocked by visitors during religious services that start at 10 a.m. and last until midday. The Migjid Janraisig Temple is an important part of the Gandan Monastery.

Best Time to Visit: Gandan Monastery can be visited year-round. However, visiting during major Buddhist festivals, such as Tsam Dance Festival or Buddha's birthday, can provide a unique cultural experience.

Hours of operation: 0900 - 1500 daily. Taking photographs in the main temple requires the payment of ₮5000 ($ 1.85 USA) but no photos are allowed in the temples when monks are performing ceremonies. Entrance fee: ₮3500 ($1.29 US).

Ganden Monastery was completely destroyed by the People's Liberation Army during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. In 1966 it was severely shelled by Red Guard artillery, and monks had to dismantle the remains. The buildings were reduced to rubble using dynamite during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976).
