Kotor City Walls

Defensive system! The walls of Kotor have been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and truly is an impressive defensive system with its towers, gates, cisterns, castles and bastions that resist the centuries. For 15 euros it is possible to walk over the walls. Impermeable!

These fortifications consist of gates, bastions, towers, and defensive walls (ramparts). Starting in the Old Town of Kotor, it takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to walk up the 1350 steps to the hilltop Kotor Fortress. Along the way, you'll pass the Church of Our Lady of Remedy.

Walls of Kotor are built to protect the town, which was an important naval, economic, and trading center. The powerful walls of Kotor are more than 4,5 km long and they follow the triangular shape of the city and the hill.

Finding the Trailhead The 'Ladder of Kotor trail' is a zig-zag uphill path located behind the old town walls (unlike the normal path up, with the entrance up located within the town walls). To find the free way up, you need to exit the old town from the connecting bridge on the north side.
