Kairaouine Mosque (Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin)

Mosques have been off-limits to non-Muslims since the time of French colonisation. The French established their protectorate in Morocco following an "incident" where Moroccans killed European workers who were walking through a Muslim cemetery.

1. University of Al Quaraouiyine. The oldest university in the world is the University of Al Quaraouiyine, in Fez, Morocco. It was originally founded as a mosque in 859, before developing into one of the leading spiritual and educational centres of the Islamic Golden Age.

Can you visit mosques in Morocco? More than 99% of the Moroccan population are Muslims, so it's hardly a surprise that you'll find many beautiful Mosques in every city and town. However, the majority of them don't allow non-Muslims to enter.

Founded back in 789 by Idris I and expanded by his son, Fez stands as the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities, a UNESCO World Heritage site brimming with scholarly legacy and vibrant traditions.
