Woermannhaus

The town is named after the Swakop River. The German settlers rendered it Swachaub, and when in 1896 the district was officially proclaimed, the version Swakopmund (German: Mouth of the Swakop) was introduced.

Swakopmund is often referred to as 'Namibia's German town', although people of German descent are in the minority there. Many black Namibians feel excluded. A visit to the place.

Swakopmund may not be the country's capital, but it's unquestionably Namibia's adventure and extreme sports hub, as well as the premier summer getaway spot. The name Swakopmund is derived from the German language meaning 'mouth of Swakop', alluding to historic overflow and flooding of the Swakop River.

Although English is the official language spoken in Namibia, you will also hear German and Afrikaans in the capital city of Windhoek and smaller towns such as Swakopmund, Lüderitz and Otjiwarongo.
