Freak Street (Jhochhen Tole)

History. Freak Street was a centre in the years of the hippie trail from the early 1960s to late 1970s. The main attraction drawing tourists to Freak Street was then the government-run hashish shops. Hippies from different parts of the world travelled to Freak Street (Basantapur) in search of legal cannabis.

As someone who walks these streets regularly, I can say: yes, Thamel is generally safe at night, as long as you know what you're doing and where to go.

The bazaar in Asan attracts shoppers from all over Kathmandu because of the tremendous variety of merchandise sold here, ranging from foodstuffs, spices and textiles to electronics and bullion. Asan is also one of the popular tourist spots in the city because of its architectural sights and charming ambience.
