Old St. Paul's

In 1666, further restoration was in progress under Sir Christopher Wren when the cathedral was devastated in the Great Fire of London. At that point, it was demolished, and the present cathedral was built on the site.

It's the same site as the important medieval cathedral, now known as Old St Paul's, which was destroyed as the Great Fire of London swept through the city in 1666. The present building was designed by architect Christopher Wren.

At St Paul's we receive virtually no government funding and as such, are fully responsible for raising all the income needed to operate. It costs at least £16 million a year to keep the Cathedral open.

The Old St Paul's Cathedral was primarily Gothic in style, with towering spires and large stained glass windows, whereas the current St Paul's Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture with its iconic dome and classical features.
